Chapter 10

BAILEY’S IRISH PUB was an icon in New York City. As David walked toward it, he couldn’t help but smile. The owners—five siblings—had led interesting lives. Its namesake, Bailey, used to work with girl gangs and had married a senator who was now the vice president of the United States. She continued her work with kids as Second Lady. Her brother Aidan had married one of Bailey’s Secret Service agents. He didn’t know what the other brothers had done with their lives, but he’d bet it was interesting. Their stories made him wish he’d had siblings.

Just as he reached the door, he caught sight of Joe Destino jogging toward him. Joe said, “Hey, buddy. Long time no see.”

“Which is what I want to talk to you about.”

“I know. The arsonist has been quiet. Damned worrisome.” Joe pulled open the intricately carved oak door and they went inside.

The interior was spacious. The focal point was a U-shaped mahogany bar; a piano perched in the corner and several tables were scattered throughout. As it was later in the day, the lunch crowd had come and gone, with only a few patrons remaining. Just the scent of the food made David’s mouth water. When had he last eaten?

A blond woman worked behind the bar. When she looked up, her face wreathed with smiles. She ducked under an opening to the floor, rushed to Joe and threw herself at him. “Joey!”

“Hey, Sophie baby. How ya doin’?”

“Couldn’t be better. I miss you.”

“I miss you, too.”

She stepped back and turned to David. “Hi. I’m Sophie Tyler.”

Still holding her hand, Joe rolled his eyes. “You still haven’t taken his name, after all this time?”

“Nope, and I won’t. Liam doesn’t care.”

“Did I hear my name?” Behind Sophie, a man came up to them. He had short, curly hair, blue eyes with an Irish sparkle in them and a wholesomeness that David could always sense. “Hey, buddy.” He gave Joe a bear hug. “It’s been a while.”

“Too long.”

Sophie began to chatter like someone who needed to know everything all at once. “Do you like being in arson? Don’t you miss the thrill of the line?”

Liam put his hand on Sophie’s neck in a gesture so intimate, David’s heart clutched. He knew in that instant he wanted intimacy with Alisha. Liam said, “This one would miss the excitement of firefighting.”

“You know I don’t miss the line. This arson stuff’s complicated.” He glanced at David. “I do miss you and the guys, though.”

“Let’s get you a seat.” Liam showed him to a table by the front window, where they could watch the streets of the Village parade by. Sophie waved to him as she went back behind the bar.

Looking after her, David remarked, “I can see she’s not your girl, but she sure seems to like you.”

“We hooked up a lotta years ago.”

“I take it she’s a firefighter.”

“Yeah, but I wonder for how long. I heard she wants to have a baby.”

A baby. Would David ever be a father? The image of Alisha, her body swollen with his child, flashed through his mind.
